My admittedly weak excuse for the lapse in posts is that the last 4 days or so have been overcast & rainy, not only interrupting our internet (which relies on a satellite & good weather) but also our entire source of electricity (100% of which we get from solar panels on our roof). Such is life in Jeremie.
Also because of the rain, construction in Gatineau has been slow this week, but a lot of progress was made last week. Read about it on the official FHH blog. I have not been to the construction site since last Friday, but I have been working on some planning, budgeting, and materials estimates for construction from the house here. You know, from my desk overlooking the Atlantic Ocean…no big deal.
Some quick-hit highlights of the past 2 weeks for me:
- Taking my turn at the wheel for the first time in Haiti - I drove to Gatineau and back twice, and I’m alive to tell about it.
- Cheering on the Brew Crew with Katie and Cherlie, and slapping fives with them after Nyjer Morgan’s walk-off hit last Thursday
- Experiencing my 1st Haitian church service, which was in Creole and mostly incomprehensible to me, but still a worthwhile experience
- Reading this book
- Reading this book
- Reading this book
As evidenced by the fact that half of my highlights were good books, the pace of life is much slower here than what I’m used to. I don’t expect things to be quite this slow all the time, especially when work groups start coming next spring, but I will no doubt have more down time than I need. It hasn’t been the easiest adjustment so far, but I am learning to make the most of my down time.
