“The most often repeated commandment in the Bible is “Do Not Fear”. It’s in there over 200 times. That means a couple of things: It means we are going to be afraid, and it means we shouldn’t let fear boss us around. Before I realized we were supposed to fight fear, I thought of fear as a subtle suggestion in our subconscious designed to keep us safe, or more importantly, keep us from getting humiliated. And I guess it serves that purpose. But fear is not only a guide to keep us safe. It’s also a manipulative emotion that can trick us into living a life that is neither meaningful nor memorable.” —Donald Miller, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years

Goat

This is a goat that we recently ate for dinner. [Don’t worry, we cooked it first.] I hesitate to post this because it’s so gross, but…I just couldn’t resist.

This is me with the Oakwood crew (minus Rachel). From left to right, they are Aaron, Neal, and John, and they hail from Oakwood Church in Delafield, WI. They went home on Sunday morning after spending 2 weeks with us in Jeremie. They were a much smaller group than the previous two, which made my job [telling them what to do] much easier, and allowed me more time to get to know each of them personally. They secured a special place in my heart by including me in Sheepshead several nights.

Click the link for some photos from the first 3 months. [I thought I posted this a month ago, but I now realize it never made it out of my “Drafts” folder. Whoops. Haiti photos are towards the bottom.]

I like Cajun Trail Mix

Words are escaping me, so photos will have to do. Here is a glimpse of my life from the past 3 weeks in photos:

image

This is a group of volunteers from Katie’s home church in New Jersey. They stayed for a week, helping with various projects around the house and in the clinic. They were a hoot, especially the guy in the yellow.

image

These are some of my homies from Elmbrook Church who came for 2 weeks. Most of them are carpenters and worked on carpenter-y things (i.e. benches, chairs, & shelves) for the new clinic and for the house.

I took both groups to the beach on the last day of their respective work weeks to reward them for their hard work.

I also ate Cajun Trail Mix while swimming in the Caribbean. Does it get any better? [If you look closely, you’ll notice the bag says “To Nick; Love, St. Nick”. Recognize that bag, Mom?]
